Nail fungus is a very common infection. It can affect one or all 20 nails. Nail fungus is predominantly caused by dermatophytes. It can also be caused by yeast and molds (aspergillus Niger)

Contributing factors:

  • Chemical factors (constant contact with water, detergent, etc.)
  • Diabetes, endocrine pathology, cancer, vascular diseases, obesity.
  • Low immunity.
  • Mechanical damage to the nail (injury).

Nail fungus causes the nail to become denser, discoloured and separated from the nail bed. If left untreated, it can cause the nails to become thick, causing discomfort in the wearing of shoes.

Nail fungus can cause the following symptoms:

  • Brittle, crumbly or ragged nail
  • Discoloration ie yellowing, yellow streaks
  • Distorted or thickened nail
  • Separation of nail from underlying skin (nail bed)

In the past, various topical and oral antifungals therapies have been used. The nail plate is an extremely dense structure; the topical antifungals do not easily penetrate in the tissue. Oral antifungal treatments are expensive accompanied by a series of side effects.

The mechanism of action in the laser therapy is a photo-thermal effect on the fungal cells. The fungi will cease reproduction and growth. The treatment involves passing the laser beam over the infected nails and surrounding skin several times until enough energy has reached the nail bed. During the session, the surface nail temperature reaches around 50 degree Celsius. Treatment will take a few minutes to an hour depending on the number of nails that are infected, and six treatments within 3-4 weeks, 1-2 times/week
